1840s original construction in Iowa – saved

The original masonry walls of Fort Atkinson State Preserve in northern Iowa recently got a major structural update.

With a new grant secured in 2024, work was ordered by TNT Tuckpointing & Building Restoration to restabilize the original mass masonry walls dating back to the 1840s frontier era.

With an on-site consult between TNT Tuckpointing owner Joshua Smyser, and Brian Barnes, Director of Product Strategy for PROSOCO's masonry anchors, the Heavy-Duty Sock Anchor system was selected for its ability to repair the historic masonry while blending in with the original materials and construction.

Here's how it worked:

They drilled 40-inch holes into the walls, put PROSOCO's Heavy-Duty Sock Anchors into those holes, and injected grout into the wall to fill in all the voids and cavities and strengthen the assembly. Our Creative Director John Young went up to Iowa to film the installation.

Anchor Systems

How to spec the right masonry anchor for restoration

When it comes to masonry anchors, restoration is a whole different ballgame than new construction. While new construction anchors are installed while the wall is being built, fastened to the backup structure and mortared into place at the veneer connection, restoration anchors are installed through existing building materials, drilled and[…]

Air & Water Barriers

Top 5 reasons why buildings fail blower door tests (and how to spec against them)

By Chris Tobias For years, building enclosure performance was judged largely by observation. If the weather barrier appeared continuous and the building stayed dry, the project was considered a success. Today, that's no longer enough. Whole-building blower door testing has transformed airtightness from a design intention into a measurable performance[…]

Air & Water Barriers

Three things architects should ask about their air barrier before the next job

The air barrier is rarely the star of the show or an exciting talking point at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. There it sits, invisible behind the cladding, feeling underappreciated yet taking on work like an absolute beast: escorting vapor molecules out of the building, optimizing HVAC efficiency, ensuring energy metrics are[…]
