Giving Seattle kids a leg-up in construction trades

photos courtesy John McCoy

As a way to boost students' skills and educate them on the variety of trades available to them as careers, Seattle Skills Center offers Seattle public high school students hands-on learning on everything from healthcare and firefighting to video game design and construction.

Those students who choose construction trades are trained at Rainier Beach (Wash.) High School.

In 2024, an instructor at Rainier Beach HS named John McCoy was introduced to our Building Envelope Technical Specialist in the region, Pat Downey, who has been volunteering his time to train young people on air and water barriers for more than 10 years. As it turns out, McCoy remembered Pat as his trainer from when he worked for a contractor in the past.

Check out these great photos John shared with us recently of students installing FastFlash

Anchor Systems

By Jeff Scarpelli, Products Engineer for PROSOCO's masonry anchoring group Although helical masonry beaming is still an underutilized and relatively unknown method in masonry repair and restoration, the number of questions and requests I get on this topic increases every week -- which I view as promising. Applying a water repellent with a drone

Last year, Jake Boyer told me that one big trend for masonry cleaning in 2025 would be applications performed via drone. That has definitely been the case as we've seen this emerging technology become more commonplace for cleanings. What we haven't seen yet this year, until now, is an application[…]
