For every roof in New York City, there’s four walls. That’s why Jay Doherty, owner of Roofing Specialties, feels optimistic about representing PROSOCO products in New York City and northern New Jersey.
Earlier this year, Roofing Specialties began independently representing PROSOCO’s R-Guard air and water barriers; masonry cleaners and water repellents; and masonry anchors for façade stabilization.
The firm was established in 1994, but Jay has been an independent rep since 1990, and Roofing Specialties’ small but mighty team boasts decades of experience. That team includes himself plus four outside sales people, one of whom is his son, Ryan Doherty. Prior to starting his own rep firm, Jay worked for Owens Corning. Roofing Specialties also represents Elevate, formerly known as Firestone.
Jay himself grew up outside of Boston, moved to the NYC metro area in 1982, and has not lived more than 30 miles outside of New York City ever since.
He knows the market well. So do his people.
“One of my outside sales guys has been with me since 1996, another since 2005,” he says. “The third one has been here since 2010, so we’ve got a lot of experience. My son, Ryan, is in sales and helps me out with all the ins and outs of running a business.”
Jay says Roofing Specialties maintains a strong contractor base and distribution partners. In deciding to represent PROSOCO, Jay says he thought about all the restoration work done in the city, and the intersection between his customers and PROSOCO’s customers.
“There’s a lot of roofing contractors we deal with that will do restoration work, but there’s a lot of restoration contractors we don’t work with yet, so my thought is, this partnership will introduce us to more restoration guys, and the roofing restorers who don’t know PROSOCO yet, we’ll make that connection for them.”
“We can do the same thing with architects and engineers. A lot of architects we deal with have never thought about air barriers.”
What’s the reputation of Roofing Specialties? Jay says, “We’re straightforward guys. We work as a team. If we tell you something, it’s going to get done. We support our customers, take care of business, and go to bat to make it fair for everybody.”
