We've got great news for sustainability professionals and consultants targeting LEED v5 or a certain GWP (global warming potential) number on their projects: Your job just got easier when it comes to concrete densifiers. We are so excited to announce that we now have product-specific, cradle-to-gate Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for all five of our concrete densifiers:
The EPD documents can be found on each product page under the "green building information" section. Or, download the EPDs directly below.
Here are our EPDs:
What is an EPD?
I personally wanted to know more, so I spoke to Alex Boyer, our Sustainability Strategist. Boyer, who managed the process of acquiring the EPDs from TrueNorth Collective, put it in really simple terms for me, which is this: Where a Health Product Declaration (HPD) is about human health, an EPD is about climate health.
Where a Health Product Declaration (HPD) is about human health, an EPD is about climate health.
He described an EPD as a calculation of the environmental impact of a product. Essentially, it's a number that tells you the equivalency (in kilograms) of CO2 added to the atmosphere when using a particular product on a building. An EPD accounts for everything from the extraction of the raw materials to the creation of the finished product and all of the transportation involved in the supply chain. EPDs help manufacturers like PROSOCO truly understand how their products impact the environment and where improvements can be made.
For design professionals in the green building community, EPDs help calculate whole-building lifecycle assessments and carbon footprints. EPDs can also be used to gain materials optimization credits for LEED, WELL and other green building certification standards.
